Risk of wildfires in Portugal

September 23, 2024

Google is using AI to help people see where forest fires in Portugal are happening.

AI processes the real-time data from Google Maps and it's pretty amazing to see how it works.

Portugal has been experiencing terrible wildfires this month (September 2024)Β and this is how it looked on Google Maps:

‍
Our map tool for analyzing hotel deals in Portugal has a layer that shows the Risk of Wildfires πŸ”₯

πŸ”΄ Red = highest risk

🟒 Green = lowest risk

‍

I was curious to see how accurate is the risk data, so I copied the locations of the September 2024 wildfires into the same map tool and compared:

‍

When you make an overlap between these two, you can see that the map with the risk of wildfires is pretty accurate. All the latest fires were in the areas with a high risk.

Why you should reconsider buying a hotel in the the area with a high risk of wildfires?

  • High chance that your hotel can burn in the next 10 years (obvious)
  • Extremely high insurance costs or even worse - you won't find an insurance company willing to take that risk
  • No tourism in the affected area after the wildfires for many years - even your hotel will survive, there will be a massive drop in the inbound tourism

Check out our map tool and play with dozen of other data layers like a risk of earthquake, precipitation, etc.
